कारण कई गिनाए जा सकते हैं, लेकिन सच यही है कि बड़ी संख्या में किशोर स्कूल से विमुख हो रहे हैं। हमने शिक्षा को जागरूकता के माध्यम के मुकाबले रोजगार के यंत्र के रूप में अधिक प्रचारित किया है। नतीजे सामने हैं कि कक्षा में पाई सीख को व्यावहारिक जीवन में उतारने या शिक्षा को जीवन-मूल्य में सही तरीके से उतारने की दिशा में हम असफल रहे हैं। कई बार तो स्कूल की पढ़ाई पूरा कर लेने तक बच्चे को समझ में ही नहीं आता कि वह अभी 12-14 साल करता क्या रहा? उसका आकलन तो साल में एक बार कागज के एक टुकड़े पर कुछ अंक या ग्रेड के तौर पर होता है और वह अपनी पहचान, काबिलियत उस अंक सूची के बाहर तलाशने को छटपटाता रहता है।
ग्यारहवीं पंचवर्षीय योजना में लक्ष्य रखा गया था कि भारत में आठवीं कक्षा तक जाते-जाते स्कूल छोड़ देने वाले बच्चों के 50 प्रतिशत के आंकड़े को 20 प्रतिशत तक नीचे लाना है, लेकिन यह संभव नहीं हुआ। आज भी कोई 40 प्रतिशत बच्चे कक्षा आठ से आगे स्कूल नहीं देख पाते हैं। सरकारी दस्तावेज कहते हैं कि स्कूल की पढ़ाई बीच में छोड़ने वालों में अधिकांश गरीब, उपेक्षित जाति व समाज के होते हैं, इसके अलावा बड़ी संख्या में बच्चियां होती हैं।
ऐसे आंकड़ों में कारण अक्सर हम सामाजिक समीकरण में खोजते हैं, उन स्कूलों में नहीं, जिन्हें बच्चे छोड़कर चले जाते हैं। वहां पढ़ाई जा रही पुस्तकों में कुछ ऐसा नहीं होता, जो उनके मौजूदा जीवन में काम आए। जिन घरों की पहली पीढ़ी स्कूल की तरफ जाती है, वह पहले तो सोचती है कि कुछ पढ़ गए, तो उससे रोजगार मिलेगा, लेकिन कक्षा के हालात, परीक्षा में उत्तीर्ण होने की प्रणाली और असमानता उन्हें समझा देती है कि स्कूल का अर्थ मिड-डे मील, वरदी और किताब का वजीफा और एक बंधन से ज्यादा कुछ नहीं।
जब बच्चा चाहता है कि वह गाय को करीब से जाकर देखे, तब स्कूल में वह खिड़की बंद कर दी जाती है, जिससे बाहर झांककर वह गाय को साक्षात देखता है। उसे गाय काले बोर्ड पर सफेद लकीरों व शब्दों में पढ़ाई जाती है। जो रामायण की कहानी बच्चे को कई साल में समझ नहीं आती, वह उसे एक रावण दहन के कार्यक्रम में शामिल होने या रामलीला देखने पर रट जाती है। ठेठ गांव के बच्चों को पढ़ाया जाता है कि ‘अ’ ‘अनार’ का। न तो उनके इलाके में अनार होता है और न ही उन्होंने उसे देखा होता है, और न ही उनके परिवार की हैसियत अनार खरीदने की होती है। सारा गांव, जिसे गन्ना कहता है, उसे ईख के तौर पर पढ़ाया जाता है। यह स्कूल में घुसते ही बच्चे को दिए जाने वाले अव्यावहारिक ज्ञान की बानगी है। असल में रंग-आकृति- अंक-शब्द की दुनिया में बच्चे का प्रवेश ही बेहद नीरस और अनमना सा होता है। स्कूल, शिक्षक और कक्षा उसके लिए यातना घर की तरह होते हैं। परिवार में भी उसे डराया जाता है कि बदमाशी मत करो, वरना स्कूल भेज देंगे। बात मान लो, वरना टीचर से कह देंगे।
सब जगह यही हो रहा है, लेकिन दिक्कत यही है कि बदलाव के लिए कुछ नहीं किया जा रहा। यह विचार पुराना है कि मध्यमवर्गीय परिवारों की प्री नर्सरी हों या गांव के सरकारी स्कूल, पांच साल की आयु तक बच्चे को हर तरह की पुस्तक, होमवर्क, परीक्षा से मुक्त रखा जाए, मगर यथार्थ में इसे कभी नहीं अपनाया जाता। हालांकि परीक्षा में उत्तीर्ण करने की अनिवार्यता ने शिक्षा के स्तर को लेकर सवाल खड़े कर दिए हैं। परीक्षा हो या न हो, लेकिन वहां जो होता है, उससे बच्चा स्कूल में कुछ अपना सा महसूस नहीं करता, वह उबासियां लेता है और समझ नहीं पाता कि उसे यहां भेजा क्यों गया है? वह बस्ता, किताब, कक्षा से दूर भाग जाता है।
बच्चा कुछ करना चाहता है, खुद अपने परिवेश से रूबरू होना चाहता है, लेकिन हम उसे पाठ्य-पुस्तक, प्रवचन और भविष्य के सुनहरे सपनों में अटका देते हैं, जबकि उसका शरीर कमरे में और मन कहीं बाहर उड़ता रहता है। ऐसे में, बच्चों का स्कूल छोड़ देना भले ही शिक्षा शास्त्रियों को परेशान करता हो, लेकिन स्कूल छोड़ने वाले बच्चों के लिए यह अक्सर राहत का सबब बनता है।
