पृथ्वी के चारों ओर रहनेवाली हवा हमेशा चलती रहती है। गर्म हवा ऊपर उठती है और ठंडी हवा नीचे आती है। जैसे ही गर्म हवा ऊपर उठती है, उसकी खाली की हुई जगह को भरने के लिए ठंडी हवा नीचे आती है। सूर्य की गरमी से धरती और समुद्र के अलग अलग हिस्से अलग अलग समय पर गरम होते हैं। और इस तरह धरती पर हवा का बहना जारी रहता है।
आक्सीजन
हवा के बड़े हिस्से को ‘एअर मास’ या वायु संहिति कहते हैं। यह अपने पास स्थित धरती या समुद्र के जिस हिस्से के ऊपर से गुजरता है उसी स्थान के तापमान के अनुसार गर्म, सूखा, ठंडा या नम हो जाता है।
नाइट्रोजन
बहुत तेज हवाओं को तूफान कहते हैं। जब ये गोलाकार घूमते हुए आगे बढती हैं तो घरों की छतें उड़ जाती हैं और समुद्र में बड़ी-बड़ी लहरें उठने लगती हैं। ऐसे तूफान आमतौर पर गर्म और नम मौसम वाले स्थान से शुरू होते हैं। कभी कभी बहुत गर्मी पड़ती है और उमस महसूस हेती है। ऐसे में पतंग भी ठीक से नहीं उड़ती। पतंग हल्की हवा में अच्छी उड़ती है।
बादल कैसे बनते हैं?
बादल पानी या बर्फ के हजारों नन्हें नन्हें कणों से मिलकर बनते हैं। ये नन्हें कण इतने हल्के होते हैं कि वे हवा में आसानी से उड़ने लगते हैं। बादल के तीन प्रमुख प्रकार होते हैं- सिरस, क्युमुलस और स्ट्रेटस। इन नामों को बादलों की प्रकति और आकार के आधार पर रखा गया है। बहुत बार बादल मिलेजुले आकार-प्रकार के भी होते हैं। ऐसे बादलों को मिलेजुले नामों से जाना जाता है। इन प्रकारों के विषय में ठीक से जानने के लिए उन के दस नाम रखे
गए हैं। ये सब नाम लैटिन भाषा में ऊँचाई पर उड़ने वाले सबसे सामान्य बादल सिरस कहलाते हैं। सिरस का अर्थ है गोलाकार। इन्हें लगभग रोज़ आसमान में देखा जा सकता है। ये बादल हल्के और फुसफुसे होते हैं। ये बर्फ के कणों से बने होते हैं। यहाँ तक कि गर्मी के मौसम में दिखने वाले बादलों में भी बर्फ के कण होते हैं क्यों कि उतनी ऊँचाई पर काफ़ी सर्दी होती है।
क्युमुलस का अर्थ है ढेर। अपने नाम के अनुरूप ये बादल रूई के ढेर की तरह दिखाई देते हैं। कभी कभी ये गहरे रंग के होते हैं तब इनमें से पानी या ओलों की वर्षा हो सकती है। ऐसे बादलों को क्युमुलोनिंबस कहते हैं। क्युमुलोनिंबस बादल एवरेस्ट पर्वत से दुगुने ऊँचे हो सकते हैं और अकसर उनमें आधा करोड़ टन से ज्यादा पानी होता है। लैटिन भाषा में क्युमुलोनिंबस का अर्थ है पानी से भरा हुआ बादल। बादलों में संघनन के कारण बूंदें बनती हैं। ऐसा तब होता है जब गरम हवा ऊपर उठती है।
और ठंडी हो जाती है। बादलों को देखकर मौसम की भविष्यवाणी की जा सकती है। स्ट्रेटस का अर्थ है फैला हुआ। अपने नाम के अनुरूप ये बादल काफ़ी नीचे होते है और पूरे आकाश को घेर लेते है। जब ऐसे बादल वर्षा करते हैं तो उन्हें निंबोस्ट्रेटस कहते हैं।
