त्तर प्रदेश में बसपा-सपा गठबंधन ने एकाएक चुनाव का माहौल पैदा कर दिया है। दोनों पार्टियों का प्रदेश में अपना-अपना ठोस जनाधार है। इनके साथ मिलने से भाजपा को कड़ी टक्कर मिलने की उम्मीद है। मायावती ने पत्रकार वार्ता में कहा कि यह गठबंधन मोदी और शाह की नींद उड़ाने वाला है। यह उनकी भाषा है। पर इतना तय है कि भाजपा के लिए चुनौतियां काफी बढ़ गई हैं।
अगर 2014 लोक सभा एवं 2017 विधानसभा चुनाव के मतों के अनुसार विचार करें तो इन दोनों पार्टियों का संयुक्त मत और भाजपा का मत लगभग बराबर है। अगर ये पार्टयिां अलग-अलग लड़तीं तो हो सकता था भाजपा 2014 नहीं दोहरा पाती किंतु उसके विजय का रास्ता आसान होता। अब चुनौतियां बढ़ गई हैं। अपना दल के साथ प्राप्त 73 सीटें केंद्र में भाजपा नेतृत्व वाली सरकार का मुख्य आधार है। भाजपा अध्यक्ष अमित शाह 50 प्रतिशत की लड़ाई की बात कर रहे हैं, लेकिन कहने और करने में अंतर होता है। हालांकि 1993 में दोनों पार्टियां साथ लड़कर भी भाजपा को साफ करने में सफल नहीं हुई थीं। सीटें लगभग बराबर थीं एवं भाजपा को मत ज्यादा मिले थे। किंतु भाजपा सरकार बनाने से वंचित रह गई थी।
कहने का तात्पर्य यह कि उत्तर प्रदेश का चुनाव परिणाम किसी भी दिशा में जा सकता है। इस गठबंधन में कांग्रेस को शामिल न करना महागठबंधन की अवधारणा को सबसे बड़ा धक्का है। मायावती ने जिस तरह की भाषा कांग्रेस के लिए प्रयोग की उसकी उम्मीद पार्टी ने नहीं की होगी। वास्तव में कांग्रेस के लिए यह बहुत बड़ा आघात है। इस गठबंधन से बाहर रहने के साथ केंद्रीय सत्ता में दावेदारी का उसका मुख्य आधार लगभग खत्म हो जाता है। रायबरेली और अमेठी की केवल दो सीटें उनके लिए छोड़ी गई हैं और वहां भी भाजपा चुनौती देने के लिए खड़ी होगी। तीन राज्यों में विजय के बाद यह माना गया था कि महागठबंधन में उसकी मोलभाव की स्थिति में इजाफा होगा वैसा हुआ नहीं।
गोरखपुर एवं फूलपुर उप चुनाव में कांग्रेस उम्मीदवार की जमानत जब्त हो गई थी। इसलिए वह अकेले चाहे जितनी सीटों पर लड़े, विजय की संभावना क्षीण है। कारण, भाजपा विरोधी वोट मुख्यत: बसपा-सपा गठबंधन में ही जाएगा। इसका असर उन राज्यों में भी हो सकता है, जहां कांग्रेस का जनाधार मजबूत नहीं है। वहां के दल उसे कम सीटें लेने अन्यथा गठबंधन से बाहर रहने को मजबूर कर सकते हैं। जो भी हो उत्तर प्रदेश की राजनीति काफी रोचक स्थिति में पहुंच गई है।
