वास्तव में आज जिस आधुनिक दौर में हमारे घर परिवार के बुजुर्ज़ों की जो स्थिति है वह काफी गंभीर है यदि इसका सीधा उदहारण जानना हो तो शहर के किसी भी वृद्धा आश्रम में जाकर देखा जा सकता है जो हर चीज शीशे की तरह साफ़ कर देगा। ऐसे में अंतरराष्ट्रीय वृद्धजन दिवस पर उप राष्ट्रपति का यह कहना कि बुजुर्ग के लिए वृद्ध शब्द का इस्तेमाल करने के बजाय वरिष्ठ शब्द का उपयोग ज्यादा अच्छा और बेहद सराहनीय होगा। उनका यह कहना भी सही है कि बुजुर्ग के अनुभव राष्ट्र की अमूल्य संपदा हैं और इनकी हर हाल में रक्षा की जानी चाहिए। पर उनके कथन से इतर, देश में बुजुर्ग के साथ कैसा व्यवहार हो रहा है, यह हर किसी के संज्ञान में है। वृद्धजन आज के वक्त में सबसे ज्यादा बेबस, दुखी, अवसादग्रस्त, मायूस, चिंतित और तिरस्कृत हैं। और ये सारी पीड़ा उन्हें उनके परिजनों से ही मिल रही है। जिस देश के संस्कार और सीख में बड़े-बूढ़ों के सानिध्य में जीवन गुजार देने की अटूट परंपरा रही है, वहां से ऐसी खबरों का आना निश्चित तौर पर शर्मनाक है।
गौरतलब है कि भारत इस वक्त दुनिया का सबसे युवा देश है। यहां युवाओं की संख्या 65 फीसद है। लेकिन 2050 तक आज का युवा भारत तब का बूढ़ा हो जाएगा। यानी 2050 तक हर पांचवां भारतीय 60 साल से ज्यादा उम्र का होगा। और इस हालात से कैसे निपटा जाएगा; यही चिंता की बात है। बात जब घर के बड़े-बूढ़ों की आती है तो र्चचा केकेंद्र में संयुक्त परिवार की ताकत या उसके क्षरण का भी जिक्र होता है। संयुक्त परिवार की टूटन ने निश्चित तौर पर वरिष्ठजनों की बाकी की जिंदगी को दुखदायी बना दिया है। नगरीकरण और औद्योगीकरण ने निश्चित तौर पर परिवार के मूल स्वरूप को चोट पहुंचाई है; उसे विखंडित किया है। इसके अलावा, अपनों से गैरों सा सितम भी इन्हें भीतर तक तोड़ देता है।
एजवेल फाऊंडेशन के सव्रे के मुताबिक बुजुगरे की 52.4 फीसद आबादी किसी-न-किसी तरह र्दुव्यवहार की शिकार है। इसे कैसे सुखमय बनाया जाए, इसी पर विमर्श की जरूरत है। समाज और परिवार को संवेदनशील होने से ही झुर्रियों वाले चेहरे खिल सकते हैं। कुछ लोगों का विचार है कि बुजुगरे को वित्तीय रूप से मजबूत करने से उन पर होने वाले अत्याचार में कमी आएगी। मगर कई मामलों में ऐसा देखा गया है कि पेंशन पाने के बावजूद उनके साथ मारपीट और गाली-गलौज की जाती है। सरकार ने भी इन वरिष्ठजनों की सुरक्षा के लिए कई योजनाएं चलाई हैं, किंतु हालात बेहतर नहीं हुए हैं। जब तक बच्चों में बड़ों के प्रति आदर और उनके अनुभवों से सीख लेने की बात नहीं बताई जाएगी, तब तक तस्वीर सुखद नहीं होगी।
