अपनी मृत्यु के 70 साल बाद भी गांधी हमारी दैनन्दिन राजनीतिक चेतना और कार्यक्रम में रस्मी तौर पर ही सही, एक केंद्रीय तत्व की तरह अपनी जगह न सिर्फ अटल हैं बल्कि उनकी प्रासंगिकता बढ़ती ही जा रही है। जो राजनीतिक पार्टी गांधी की हत्या के कट्टरपंथी विचार के गर्भ से निकली है उसकी सरकार और उस सरकार का सरदार भी राजनैतिक मजबूरी के चलते ही सही, गांधी को सार्वजनिक तौर पर पूज्य और अनुकरणीय महात्मा मानने को बाध्य है, यह गांधी की सार्वकालिक महानता और अनिवार्यता का ही द्योतक है। लेकिन कटु सत्य यह भी है कि सरकारें चाहे किसी भी पार्टी की हों, गांधी के नाम पर रस्म अदायगी से ज़्यादा कुछ करती नहीं, कर नहीं सकतीं क्योंकि उससे ज़्यादा करने की उनकी मंशा ही नहीं होती। वर्ना हिंद स्वराज वाले गांधी को याद करते हुए स्मार्ट सिटी का स्वाँग न रचा जाता।
क्या यह बेहतर नहीं होगा कि हम गांधी को रस्मी तौर पर याद करने का काम राजनीतिक दलों और सरकारों पर छोड़ दें और एक समाज के तौर पर उनकी कुछ बहुत बुनियादी बातों पर निजी और सार्वजनिक जीवन में अमल करने की कोशिश करें। सादगी से जीना, सच्चाई पर डटे रहना, हर तरह से अहिंसा का पालन करना और अपने स्वार्थों के बीच पराई पीर के लिए भी थोड़ी जगह बनाये रखना, प्रकृति और पर्यावरण से जुड़ना और अपने लालच के लिए इनका दोहन न करना – यह सब गांधीवाद के प्रमुख तत्व ही तो हैं। अगर हम इन पर थोड़ा थोड़ा भी अमल शुरू करें तो शायद अपने समाज को बेहतर बना पाएँगे। भारत जैसे विषम आर्थिक स्थिति वाले देश के लिए जहाँ राजनीति और समाज लगातार हिंसक और असहिष्णु होता जा रहा है, फ़िलहाल तो यह सब एक बड़ी ज़िम्मेदारी और ज़रूरत भी है।
